Training Your Child

Thanks to my cousin, Laura, at 10 million miles, I always find myself looking for ways to use her tips on Teachable Tuesdays to bring the world to life for my young daughter.  No matter what I am doing on Tuesdays, I find myself reflecting about ways to use that moment to teach my child.

The most important question I have been asking myself lately is, “What do I do throughout the day to teach Hannah the truth of God’s Word?”

I was truly struck by this thought last week during one of our Mommy and Me activities.  As usual, we ladies were having so much fun that lunchtime came, and we were still there!  Our generous hostess, Naomi, always offers to feed the kids (and the moms as well).  Hannah is the youngest, so I sat down at the table to feed her while the other kids munched on chicken nuggets.  Before every meal, my family (including Hannah) prays over our food.  I asked the other kids to stop eating and pray with us.

What struck me as odd was what Naomi said next – “Oh, they don’t know how to do that.”

Why not?  Granted, these kids are 2 and under, but why don’t they know that they are supposed to stop and thank God for their food?  I’m pretty sure that Hannah doesn’t close her eyes when we pray, but I do know that she will usually hold my hand and be still.

Somebody once commented to me that they thought it was odd that I did devotions with Hannah or prayed with her at such an early age.  My response?

“Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it” Proverbs 22:6 (KJV).

About themommyfactor

First of all, I am a child of God. I was blessed to come to know Him as my personal Savior when I was just 5 years old! God has blessed me with a wonderful husband, Jamie, who puts up with all of my crazy ideas; a beautiful daughter, Hannah, who is teaching me how to mother in God's grace; a handsome little boy, Ephraim, who keeps us all laughing; and bossy, sweet-natured Harmony, who is never boring! We are enjoying the ups and downs of being parents and look forward to meeting others who are on the same unpredictable journey of parenthood!
